Preparing for the Cooler Months

As the long days of summer begin to fade, autumn brings cooler temperatures, changing colours and a natural shift in how we use our outdoor spaces. While your pool or spa might not be in use as often, this season is a crucial time to stay on top of maintenance.

Taking the right steps during autumn can help protect your investment, prevent damage and make reopening your pool or spa in spring much easier. From falling leaves to adjusting water chemistry, a little effort now goes a long way. Whether you're planning to keep swimming through the season or gradually winding things down, we've got practical tips to help you stay on track.

Stay on Top of Leaves and Debris

Falling leaves and wind-blown debris are common in autumn and can quickly clog your skimmer baskets, block filters or stain your pool surface. Make it a habit to skim your pool or spa regularly and empty baskets as needed. Installing a leaf cover or using a pool blanket can also make this job much easier by reducing the amount of organic matter entering your water.

Keep Water Chemistry in Check

Even if you’re not swimming as often, your pool or spa water still needs attention. Cool temperatures can slow chlorine activity, so continue testing your water weekly. Keep pH, chlorine and total alkalinity within recommended ranges to avoid issues like cloudy water or algae growth. Spa owners should also check sanitiser levels more frequently if the spa is used during the cooler months.

Adjust Filtration Time

As temperatures drop and pool use decreases, your filtration system does not need to run as long. You can reduce your filter run time to around 4 to 6 hours a day while still keeping the water circulating and clean. This also saves on energy costs. Be sure to check that your timer is updated and your equipment is running efficiently.

Clean Your Equipment

Autumn is a great time for a thorough equipment check. Clean your filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions, whether it’s a cartridge, sand or DE filter. Inspect your pump and chlorinator for any signs of wear or blockages. For spas, check the heater and circulation systems to ensure they are operating properly heading into winter.

Monitor Water Level

With cooler weather and less evaporation, your pool may hold its level better in autumn. However, rainfall can sometimes cause the water to overflow, especially in uncovered pools. Maintain the correct water level to ensure proper skimming and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your equipment.

Plan for the Off-Season

If you’re thinking of pausing pool or spa use during winter, autumn is the best time to prepare. Start by balancing the water, cleaning the pool thoroughly and adding an appropriate algaecide if recommended. Consider scheduling a professional service to ensure everything is ready for a period of reduced activity. Covering your pool or spa will also help protect it from debris and UV damage.

Once these steps are in place, your autumn maintenance becomes simple. Regularly check chlorine levels each week and clear the skimmer basket as needed to keep things running smoothly. For peace of mind and long-term water health, a full water test every two to four weeks will help ensure your pool or spa stays balanced and your equipment keeps working efficiently.
