Reset, Refresh and Get Ready for Summer

As the chill of winter fades and temperatures start to rise, spring is the ideal time to get your pool back into shape. With more sun, blooming gardens, and longer days, your pool will soon see more action—so a focused spring maintenance routine can help you prevent issues before they begin.

Spring pool care is about clearing out winter debris, tackling pollen, rebalancing your water, and preparing your pool for a busy swimming season ahead. Here’s how to make a smooth seasonal transition.

Seasonal Spring Pool Care Tips

Clear Out Winter Debris and Spring Mess

Spring brings falling blossoms, fresh leaves and wind-blown debris—especially if your pool is near trees or gardens. Skim the surface, clear out the skimmer basket, and vacuum the pool thoroughly. Brush walls and steps to remove algae spores that may have settled during the cooler months.

Check the Water Level After Winter

Heavy rains or evaporation may have altered your water level. Top it up to halfway up the skimmer opening to ensure proper filtration and circulation before starting the system.

Inspect and Service Equipment Before Summer Load

Spring is the time to make sure your pump, filter, chlorinator and heater are all working efficiently before they’re put to the test. Clean the pump and skimmer baskets, backwash your filter or clean the cartridge, and inspect for wear or leaks. Book a licensed SPASA pool technician for a spring service if needed.

Watch for Pollen Build-Up

Pollen is common in spring and can give your pool a yellow or dusty appearance. A pool clarifier can help bind fine particles for easier removal. Check and clean your filter more frequently if pollen levels are high.

Balance Water After the Off-Season

Water balance can shift over winter. Bring a sample to your local SPASA member pool shop for a full spring test—including pH, chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabiliser levels. Proper balance helps prevent algae growth as temperatures rise.

Check Salt and Sanitiser Systems

If you have a saltwater pool, spring is the time to inspect the salt chlorinator cell for scale build-up and check salt levels. Chlorine pools may need their dosing systems topped up or recalibrated to handle increased sunlight and warmer water.

Remove Phosphates

Spring rain and garden run-off can introduce phosphates, which feed algae. Ask your pool professional to test for phosphate levels and recommend treatment if needed.

Inspect Safety and Accessories

Check pool fencing, latches and covers to make sure they’re secure and compliant. It’s also a good time to clean pool toys, test pool lighting, and check handrails for rust or movement before they’re used more frequently.

Keep It Going Through Spring

Once your spring prep is complete, regular upkeep will keep your pool healthy and inviting. Throughout spring:

  • Test chlorine and pH every few days

  • Clean skimmer baskets weekly

  • Brush and vacuum weekly to prevent algae and pollen build-up

  • Run your filter 6–8 hours daily

  • Book a full water test at least once a month

This spring-focused care helps prevent cloudy water, equipment issues and algae—so when summer hits, your pool is crystal clear and ready to enjoy.
